PM Modi Returns After Landmark Five-Nation Tour and BRICS Summit Participation

The tour began in Accra, Ghana, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the West African nation in over three decades.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi on Thursday morning, successfully concluding a significant five-nation diplomatic tour spanning Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia from July 2 to 9, which also included his participation in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The tour began in Accra, Ghana, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the West African nation in over three decades. PM Modi held bilateral talks with President John Mahama, emphasizing cooperation in critical minerals, defence, maritime security, and energy. He was conferred Ghana’s highest civilian award, The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana.

In Trinidad and Tobago, PM Modi made history by becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the Caribbean nation since 1999. He addressed the country’s Parliament and announced OCI cards for the sixth-generation Indian diaspora. He was honoured with The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the nation’s highest accolade.

PM Modi’s visit to Argentina included a productive meeting with President Javier Milei. Key areas of collaboration such as defence, energy, agriculture, and renewable resources were discussed. PM Modi was presented the Key to the City of Buenos Aires by the city’s Chief, Jorge Macri.

In Brazil, PM Modi attended the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro from July 6–7 and held talks with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brasilia to strengthen the Strategic Partnership across various sectors. He was honoured with Brazil’s highest civilian award, The Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross.

Concluding his tour in Namibia, PM Modi addressed the Namibian Parliament, receiving a standing ovation, and was awarded The Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis, Namibia’s highest civilian award, by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

The week-long diplomatic tour marked a significant milestone in India’s foreign policy, strengthening global partnerships across Africa, South America, and the Caribbean, while reinforcing India’s commitment to South-South cooperation and multilateralism.
